The Discerning Process of Song Selection

Songs that were once considered standard repertoire in elementary music programs across Canada are now being identified as including derogatory, misogynistic, and/or harmful texts. While there has been research and findings compiled on the text of songs (Bailey, 2020; Ellingsen, 2019; Kelly-McHale, 2018; McDougle, 2021), this is still a relatively new field, particularly regarding how information about texts shared with teachers. How can existing education provide learning opportunities around selection for both in-service preservice teachers? The Orff Level Certificate Program Carl works program occurs yearly basis, approximately 25 teacher educators 250 teachers enrolled country. With majority “white, middle class, female, heterosexual teachers” (Holden & Kitchen, 2019, p. 27), need to acknowledge social hierarchy present classroom, is, power privilege held by educators. By working think critically what musics include, Teacher Educators tools “shape curriculum pedagogy purposefully places classroom alongside students’ own musics, experiences interests (Hess, 2017, 71). In March 2021, an online survey, combination multiple-choice open-ended questions was sent Canada. Responses received from 17 following guided investigation: (a) selected inclusion program? (b) Have changes list over last five years? If so, driving these changes? (c) do see their process impacting teachers’ choices repertoire? Using thematic analysis, I analyzed responses looking common themes. These have served foundation dialogue Educators. next phase study will begin spring 2022 where be interviewing three participants further clarify survey portion research.
